Everyone in the Netherlands should be able to trust that medicines are genuine and of good quality. The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ) is in charge of addressing illegal supply and illegal trade in medicines.
We monitor the following
The inspectorate monitors what companies and individuals do. To do so, we use:
- reports of citizens and companies to the inspectorate;
- signals from data analysis on trade in medicines;
- illegal trade found by other parties such as customs or police.
Within administrative law, we also monitor authorised trading. A key objective here is to keep medicines and active ingredients 'clean'. This means without illegal or counterfeit products.
Joint monitoring
We cooperate with other organisations monitoring the illegal trade in medicines. They work in other legal frameworks or focus on other elements. The Customs authorities monitor imports and exports, the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NWVA) monitors veterinary medicines, and the Public Prosecution Service deals with illegal trade as a matter of criminal law.
